Ozu (2021) review [OAFF 2021]

Chishu Ryu makes another cameo appearance, this time as a newspaper reporter at the end of the movie. The fact that many players here recur in the next two or three films further expand the loss.

At the start, the focus is on investigation and uncertainty, building towards an empathetic presentation of the burden forced upon women by society. This is all complemented by an outstanding score, which is in the BFI Prostitutes Ozu - I have no idea how original it is. The music is expressive Prostitutes Ozu experimental, bending Prostitutes Ozu the film like mercury and feeling - at points- like the…. Surprisingly melodramatic for Ozu, sorry, ""Ernst Schwarz".

Not sure if that's entirely a good thing. Fascinating to see how Ozu's style has remained consistent: whether silent or a talkie, comedy or tragedy, the man never misses with that crystalline framing.

It may not be as Prostitutes Ozu as in his later, more developed works, but for an early short I wouldn't necessarily expect that. In addition, it was the narrative that held Prostitutes Ozu back for me, the limits of the runtime making the ending feel rather blunt.

Nonetheless, still some themes that are interesting to see explored in an early film like this, and the stories of Chikaku and Ryoichi are never less than sympathetically told. Ryoichi and Chikako, brother and sister, live together. Chikako toils during the day and, at night, prostitutes herself to fund his college tuition. During his prolific career, the Japanese director Yasujiro Ozu, a woman who works as a prostitute in order to fund her brother Ryoichi's studies.

One of Ozu's first strong tragic pieces. Ozu's "Tokyo no Onna" Women Prostitutes Ozu Tokyo is a short film that delivers alot of tragic import for its length, timing Prostitutes Ozu execution. It is a simple tale, concerning the lives of a Japanese college student and his sister.

There are a series of fine indoor shots, perfectly lighted and composed in a dark, pre-film noir mood.
